On Saturday, April 1, 2017, hundreds of volunteers worked together to remove 28.52 tons of trash and 1.64 tons of tires from neighborhoods, parks, and greenways across the Roanoke Valley in celebration of Clean Valley Day.
The goal of this annual valley-wide initiative, organized by the Clean Valley Council, is to promote respect for both the local community and environment. Each year, Clean Valley Day volunteers are provided with gloves and trash bags and can choose to work in groups or individually. Many volunteers picked up trash in parks, along greenways or roadsides, in stream banks, and in neighborhoods. Roanoke Parks and Recreation’s Urban Forestry team members, John Hicks and Derek Crager, were on-site helping collect and haul trash from volunteer sites throughout the day.
Clean Valley Day is just one example of how local volunteers work together to make the City of Roanoke’s environment cleaner. Other upcoming environmentally-friendly events in Roanoke include:
