The Historic Fishburn Mansion on the grounds of Mountain View, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, will be undergoing a planning process to develop plans for restoration and improvement. This process will be a collaborative effort between Roanoke Parks and Recreation and the Friends of Mountain View non-profit organization. Public input is needed to help inform the planning and design process by determining current uses and potential needs. The overall goal of this effort is to:
- Identify priorities and needed improvements to the facilities and grounds.
- Understand community interest in the property and identify opportunities for increased preservation efforts and continued public use.
- Identify opportunities to plan for and fund identified construction projects.
Because of its historical significance, any proposed improvements must be sensitive to the architectural character of the building and grounds, while also making it more functional for its purpose as a recreation center and addressing important repairs.
(Note: The community garden on the grounds is leased and managed by LEAP—any improvements to the mansion and the grounds will not impact that space and its associated programming.)
Additional information is available through the City of Roanoke’s Zencity Hub.
If you are interested in efforts to support this historic property, the Friends of Mountain View is a non-profit organization which helps to protect Historic Mountain View and its legacy. The Friends of Mountain View was instrumental in securing the grant funding for this project, and will continue to provide volunteer support throughout the planning process.
Survey deadline has been extended to January 19, 2024.
