We’re thrilled to share some updates about the exciting projects we’re working on to build a welcoming community through play! 2024 is shaping up to be a year of transformation for Roanoke City, and we can’t wait to share with you.
Eureka Recreation Center: A Fresh Start
Get ready for a fully revitalized Eureka Recreation Center! We’re giving this beloved community hub a major makeover. The center will be closing after summer programs in 2024 to kick off construction, aiming to reopen in spring 2026 (this timeline is subject to change)
Project Highlights:
- 16,463 sq. ft. building
- This includes renovation of the existing facility, with new 5,750 SQFT addition
- Double classroom capacity for after school program
- Gym improvements: upgraded flooring, HVAC, seating replacements
- New multi-use community room, bathrooms, and staff workspace
- Double the parking capacity; the design has 56 total parking spaces
- Landscape improvements: spacious event lawn with ADA path, planting 140 trees
- On track for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification
- Interior & exterior public art opportunities incorporated into plans
Washington Park Pool (Lower Washington Park): Dive into Fun.
*Note: The historic Evans House falls outside the pool footprint and will not be included in this project.
Our plans for the Washington Park Pool are splashing with excitement! Construction is already underway, with a target opening for the summer 2025 season (Timeline subject to change).
Project Highlights:
- 14′ slide plus 3 lap lanes and a lazy river
- Zero-entry area with water features including: tumble buckets with rain-shower, water mushroom, fountain kiddie slide. ADA lift
- Shade areas patio seating bath house (not pictured in rendering)
In-River Park: Nature’s Playground
The planned In-River Park at Wasena Park will offer exciting in-stream whitewater features, easy access for a broad range of users and abilities, and plenty of spots to relax and enjoy the scenery. Construction is set to begin in early 2025, with an expected completion in 2026 (Timeline subject to change).
Project Highlights:
– Proposed plans include the addition of in-river features as well as multiple potential access points along the river (such as at Memorial Bridge, Wasena Park, and Vic Thomas Park)
– Community access and enjoyment have been prioritized in the design process, with a focus on ADA river access, a variety of skill-building whitewater features, enhanced wading spaces, scenic viewing points, and calm river play areas
Skatepark: A Skater’s Dream
The new Wasena Skatepark is in the works. Based on community feedback, the design will focus on street skating elements. Construction is scheduled to start in winter 2024, with an opening planned for early 2026 (Timeline subject to contractor’s schedule). We’ll be hosting a community meeting this fall to share the proposed design and get your input.
Project Highlights:
- The new Wasena Skatepark will be located where the basketball and tennis courts are currently located
- The design will feature primarily street skate elements, as preferred in the community feedback from the 2018 Feasibility Study
- Total project budget is $1.6 million, including $200,000 from the City of Salem, $50,000 from the Town of Vinton, and $280,000 in donations from private residents to add a pumptrack to the scope
