If you or someone you know has a love of the outdoors, we need your help! Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Virginia (BBBS) is currently looking for “bigs” to volunteer as mentors for the new Outdoor Adventure Club (OAC).
Roanoke Parks and Recreation, Roanoke Outside, and BBBS have recently partnered to create this new program meant to provide more outdoor opportunities for youth in the region. The program expands upon the Outdoor Explorers Mentoring Program that BBBS and Roanoke Outside started two years ago. The OAC provides children 11-13 years old in underserved communities access to Roanoke’s incredible outdoor community through monthly activities and one-on-one mentoring. Additionally, this 12-month program provides transportation, instruction, and appropriate gear at no cost to the participants, thereby eliminating all barriers to the outdoors for underrepresented and low-income urban youth.
We’ve got the participants and the funding; now we need the mentors! BBBS is currently searching for “bigs” to help mentor “littles” and experience all the wonderful outdoor activities around Roanoke. If you or someone you know is interested, please consider applying.
Activities start in September, but the application process starts now. To apply to become a mentor, please visit http://www.bigslittles.org/volunteer/roanoke.
