May has set a record for rainfall, and the greenways took a hit as a result. Many sections of greenway are closed as our crews work to get them in working condition. Here is the most up-to-date information on closures:
- Tinker Creek Greenway: Open. Crews still need to get under Dale Ave to get the sediment out, but it is moved off of the tread for now so users can get through. There is still tree debris that crews will get in the morning.
- Mill Mountain Greenway: Open. Some trees are down on Riser, Big Sunny, and Crystal Spring trails, but we have some volunteers working on these. THANK YOU!
- Garden City Greenway: Open.
- Lick Run Greenway: Open.
- Murray Run Greenway: There are some trees down, but crews were unable to fully assess the damage today. They will work on the rest of this tomorrow.
- Roanoke River Greenway:
–Peters Creek/Blue Ridge Drive/Aerial Way: Open
–Bridge Street to Vic Thomas Park: Open
–Wasena Park to River’s Edge: Closed. There is a downed tree near the playground and 97 linear feet of trail tread damaged near the Green Goat. Debris and mud are on both bridges (some 6 to 8 feet deep!), and water is still flowing over the lowest bridge. The forecast is calling for more rain this week, so this section might be closed for a while.
–RMH to Piedmont: Open
–Piedmont to 9th Street: Open, but trail narrowed down to three to four feet because of significant pavement damage.
–9th Street to Bennington: Open.
We appreciate out crews’ and our volunteers’ hard work and dedication to get all of this open in just one day, and we thank all of you for your patience as we work to clear and fix the rest of the damage in the coming days and weeks.
