Did you know that July is Parks and Recreation Month? To celebrate the greatest month of the year, we have put together a ton of fun (some even free!) activities to encourage folks to get out and enjoy our parks. Because there’s so much going on, here is a quick reference for all the fun activates and how you can celebrate Parks and Recreation Month here in Roanoke!
Join Our Scavenger Hunt
In case you haven’t seen, we’ve got an epic scavenger hunt going on! Do You Gnome Our Parks is a scavenger hunt
where a gnome (affectionately named Noké) is hidden in one of our 71 parks, plazas, or greenways. Each day, we release a clue to help you narrow down your search for him. There are three ways to win each week:
- Find Noke and win that weeks’ awesome prize!
- Because Bojangles signed on as a sponsor, we’ve also hidden two chickens in a park each week. Find one of those, and you win a Tailgate Box.
- Tag PLAY Roanoke on Facebook or Instagram while you’re hunting, and you could win $50 just for participating!

raise a glass for Parks
We have partnered with Starr Hill for the second year in a row to bring you Pints for Parks! Every Monday and Tuesday in July, $1 from every beer sold goes back into your parks! Head there on a Monday because, hey, it’s Monday. Get there on a Tuesday and stay for trivia night! Learn more here.
Outfit Yourself in PLAY Roanoke Gear
Support your local Parks and Recreation department by getting your very own PLAY Roanoke shirt or hat! We have a webstore up throughout the month of July to order a tank, tee, or sweater! We are also selling some tees, hats, and socks on site at Starr Hill.
Float with Us
To cap off the month, we have a Summer Floatilla planned on July 29! It is free to participate—just bring your own flotation device! We’ll start at Roanoke Mountain Adventures at 5:30 and float to the kayak launch at The Bridges. Then, we’ll head over the Starr Hill to celebrate the last Monday of Pints for Parks! So hit up our parks, take a selfie or two with a gnome, and bring home an addition to your wardrobe. Help us encourage PLAY and celebrate the parks, programs, and facilities that make our region so awesome!
