Hey Roanoke! June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community! This year, PLAY Roanoke is teaming up with the Roanoke Diversity Center to bring you the Queer Adventure Club (QAC)! Together, we’ve planned a variety of adventure-based activities starting this month, and offered throughout the summer.
QAC: New River Trail Ride & Dine
June 8
This 57 mile long Rails to Trails project stretches from Galax to Pulaski. We will be biking a 15 mile section from Foster Falls to the Hiawassee River Bridge. This trail is rated mild to moderate. After our ride we will head to the iconic Draper Mercantile. A small historic village along the New River with unique shops and an astounding restaurant with delicious food.
QAC: Wild Caving
June 22
We are going wild caving! Virginia is home to more 4,000 caves and caverns. Wild caving means no lights but the ones you bring, no marked paths, no hand rails, but loads of adventure. Our guides will take you under the earth to one of the many wild caves in our area. Our caves sit comfortably all year round at about 55°F. So you can beat the Summer heat and come caving with us
QAC: Mill Mountain Hang Out & Tie Dye
June 29
What better way to round out the Summer kick-off of Queer Adventure Club than to hang out around a bonfire and enjoy the community we built over the course of PRIDE Month. Join Roanoke City Parks & Rec and the Roanoke Diversity Center for a chill night of S’mores, drinks, and tie dye. We have printed special QAC bandanas for participants to tie dye while we hang out. Hope to see you there.
QAC: Summer Camp
July 27
Join us at Peaks Retreat Adventure Center and enjoy a true summer camp experience. You can cruise on the zipline, weave through the canoe maze, and try to hit the bullseye at the archery range or chill by the pool.
QAC: Roanoke River Stand Up Paddleboard
August 17
Join us for a fun downriver float and paddle on the Roanoke River on Stand Up Paddleboards (SUP). This section of river is very calm, which will give participants the opportunity to get comfortable on the boards during the paddle, whether you want to sit, kneel, or stand. Don’t hesitate to jump off your board to cool off from the summer heat. Instructors will be ready to provide tips and tricks to make your trip downriver a joy.
