Roanoke Parks and Recreation (PLAY Roanoke) is excited to celebrate Kids to Parks Day with another free movie night in Elmwood Park, this year with a double feature! Kids to Parks Day is a national day of outdoor play intended to connect kids and families with their local, state, and national parks.
On May 18, families are invited to spend the day exploring one of the City of Roanoke’s numerous parks, plazas, greenways, or trails. Then, as the day winds down, the Elmwood Park amphitheater will open to moviegoers for a double feature beginning with Wonka (2023), followed by a selection of short films from the 2024 International Paddling Film Festival. “We look forward to an entertaining and inspiring evening and want to welcome families and kids of all ages to join us!” said Tim Pohlad-Thomas, Events Coordinator with Roanoke Parks and Recreation.
Gates to the amphitheater will open at 5:45 PM, Wonka will begin at 6:15 PM, and the Paddling Film Festival will begin at 8:30 PM. Families are welcome to bring chairs, blankets, and snacks. The first 150 families to arrive will receive a free bag of kettle corn thanks to Two Roosters Kettle Corn, and Charlee Tropical will have water ice and lemonade for sale. There are no tickets to this event, and it is free and open to the public.
“Last year’s first Kids to Parks Day movie night was a big success, welcoming families from across the city. We are excited to expand the festivities this year with a double feature, and hope the paddling films inspire families to take advantage of the outdoor recreation opportunities that Roanoke has to offer!” said Tim Pohlad-Thomas, Events Coordinator with Roanoke Parks and Recreation.
