Over the past several months, the Parks and Recreation Department has been tackling numerous maintenance projects across the city. Many of these tasks were identified as deferred maintenance priorities when the Parks and Recreation Master Plan was developed in 2019. Earlier this year, the city began investing a sum of $2.3 million in the park system, enabling these priorities to be addressed.
“We’re looking at park amenities that haven’t been repaired or renovated in some time. So, we’re not necessarily building new amenities or adding to the parks system,” says Michael Clark, Director of Roanoke Parks and Recreation. “We want to make sure we’re providing the best possible amenities we can. The timing was right with available funds from last fiscal year as well as capital funding,” Clark notes. While this will not fully cover the list of deferred maintenance needs in the department, it does mark the single largest and most diverse investment in park infrastructure in the past twenty years.
Listed below are projects currently slated to be addressed as part of this initiative (completed projects are noted). For updates as work is completed, please view our Deferred Maintenance project page. Keep in mind that the list below is specific to deferred maintenance priorities, and does not include the full scope of work done by the department. You can find additional information on recent park improvements here.
*Due to the nature of maintenance and construction projects, timelines change frequently and are dependent on many factors (supply chain delays, outside contractor availability, inflation, weather, etc.). Please keep this in mind and be patient as we tackle this list and many other projects.
