In March 2022, Roanoke Mountain Adventures was awarded grant funding to build a beginner friendly bike loop along the Roanoke River Greenway in Vic Thomas Park. This was one of ten grant recipients for projects making an immediate impact in the local outdoor community awarded by Project Outside. Vic Thomas Park currently features exercise equipment and a sculpture garden along the Roanoke River Greenway, which crisscrosses through the park. The new bike loop will be encircled by the greenway and will wind around the wild grasses and flowers in the no-mow area of the park.
PLAY Roanoke, Roanoke Mountain Adventures, and Blue Ridge Off-road Cyclists will begin work on the bike loop on October 6. While the loop is being built, a short section of the greenway as well as the parking lot will be closed. Fortunately, greenway users can take the lower loop as a detour, and parking can be found at nearby Wasena Park. The closure and construction are anticipated to be brief, but keep an eye on PLAY Roanoke social media for updates.
