On Tuesday, October 26 at its annual conference, Virginia Recreation and Park Society (VRPS), recognized Roanoke Parks and Recreation for three awards: Best New Program, Best New Special Event, and Distinguished Private Sector Award.
The 67th Annual Conference of the Virginia Recreation and Park Society held in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The conference is a learning exchange and provides an opportunity for recreation and park professionals to discuss areas of common interest.
Highlighting each year’s conference is a formal presentation of awards. This state-wide program honors individuals, departments and organizations throughout Virginia who have demonstrated excellence in any of several areas during the previous year. 115 applications were received vying for awards in 15 different categories. Judged by a jury of its peers, Roanoke Parks and Recreation received three awards: Best New Program with the Junior Ranger Program; Best New Special Event with the Timeless Twenties Party; and Distinguished Private Sector Service for local partner Starr Hill Roanoke.
Patrick Boas, Recreation Manager, said, “It goes without saying that 2020 was a tough year for everyone. I’m really proud that, even through these challenges, our staff was able to put together some Best-in-Class programming recognized by our peers throughout the state.”
The Department is honored by the recognition, but they’re especially proud of the Distinguished Private Sector Award. “When we were looking at the award categories, we knew we had to submit on Starr Hill’s behalf. They truly believe in our department’s mission and support parks and recreation in Roanoke,” Stephanie Long, Marketing Coordinator, said. “Now, Starr Hill is recognized statewide for all of the important work they do in our community, and we couldn’t be happier.”
