In May, heavy rains and flooding caused major damage to sections of the Roanoke River Greenway. The most notable of those is the missing tread near The Green Goat and the damage underneath 9th Street. After months of behind-the-scenes work, these sections of greenway will undergo repairs the week of September 21, weather permitting. These repairs will take a few days to complete, and we ask the public to adhere to greenway closure signs for their own safety and so as to not interrupt work crews operating heavy equipment.
The section near The Green Goat (pictured above) will be repaired on Monday and Tuesday of next week. This section has been closed since May, so we ask users to continue to use the detour that has been in place.
As for 9th Street, we have been able to keep the greenway open while cordoning off a small, damaged portion. However, we are implementing a full closure while these repairs are completed. The closure will be from Piedmont Park to just past 9th Street (pictured below), and we ask users to adhere to all closure signs for their own safety and for work to be completed on time. Barring poor weather or unforeseen issues, this section will be closed from Monday, September 21 through Wednesday, September 23 and reopened on Thursday, September 24. We ask that greenway users avoid this section completely or use an on-road detour along Riverland Road.
We appreciate everyone’s patience as we make these repairs and get our greenways back in working condition. If you have questions, please reach out by emailing playroanoke@roanokeva.gov or calling 540-853-2236.
