On Wednesday, May 6, Roanoke City Council and City Manager Bob Cowell announced the plan for reopening the paved greenways in the City of Roanoke.
Provided the Governor initiates Phase I of his plans as indicated, Garden City, Lick Run, Mill Mountain, and Tinker Creek greenways will all reopen on Friday, May 15. On Tuesday, May 19, the Roanoke River Greenway will reopen.
All parking areas at greenway trailheads will remain closed at this time. Wiley Drive will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic from Wasena to Franklin Road, and between Franklin Road and Crystal Spring Avenue, to further facilitate sufficient physical distancing.
Trailheads that will be closed:
- 10th Street at Brown Robertson Park
- Washington Park near the picnic shelter
- Bridge Street
- Vic Thomas Park
- Wasena Park (near the playground)
- Smith Park
- Piedmont Park
- Bennington/13th Street
- Wise Avenue
- Dale Avenue (both North and South)
We ask that you follow all general greenway etiquette as usual, but in addition, please do the following:
- Practice social distancing of at least six feet
- Wear a mask
- If you’re sick, please stay home
- Do not gather in groups larger than 10

Roanoke, VA—The paved greenways in the City of Roanoke will remain closed until the Governor lifts the Stay Home Order anticipated to occur as part of the Phase I Reopening described in his Forward Virginia Blueprint https://www.governor.virginia.gov/newsroom/all-releases/2020/april/headline-856337-en.html This is an extension of the original closure on April 3. The City recognizes the value of the outdoors and exercise at this time; thus, all 60 of our parks and their 14,000 acres, courts, athletic fields, trails and playgrounds – most of which are in close proximity to each of our neighborhoods, remain open. Click here for a list of lesser-known parks to visit.
Parks users are asked to keep the following in mind while recreating or exercising:
- Don’t visit parks and trails if you feel unwell.
- Cough into your elbow.
- Practice safe social distancing from other patrons.
- Recreate on playground equipment at your own risk as it is not regularly disinfected.
- Park restrooms, including port-o-johns, are closed.
- Do not gather in groups larger than 10.
