If parks could talk, they’d tell countless stories. But because they can’t (sadly), we relied on all of you! These residents shared their park-posals with us and how a local park made the perfect backdrop for one of life’s most important questions.
Mariah and Greg–Highland Park, April 2017
“During an Easter picnic, we got engaged in Highland Park with her whole family watching. We’re about a block from the park, and it’s one of the reasons we chose to settle in that neighborhood. We love walking in the park, playing disc golf, and going to the dog park, so I figured, why not add this memory to Highland Park as well? Her family was in town for the weekend, the weather was perfect for a picnic, and I asked her to marry me. We got married in November 2017 and welcomed a little boy in December 2018.”

Camille and Bryan–Mill Mountain Park, February 2016
“I always planned to propose while it was snowing because my wife and I love the snow. Having received around 8” to 10” of snow overnight with it still falling, I presented the idea of going up to the Star to take photos. We quickly put on our boots and ski coats and made the trek up. After a few minutes of pretending to take photos, I got on my knee and asked her to marry me. We just celebrated our third wedding anniversary and have been blessed with a beautiful daughter, Savannah.”

Amanda and Chase–Market Square Plaza, October 2016
“I chose to propose to Amanda right in the middle of Market Square Plaza because it was the place where we first met—every time we were downtown, we would talk about how special that spot was, so I wanted to propose there. Also, we both love downtown and how beautiful it is! Center in the Square is one of our favorite places in the city, and I knew it would not only be a beautiful spot to propose, but somewhere we would visit for years to come.”

Kait and Mark–Raleigh Court Park, July 2016
“I was getting ready for work and had a lot on my mind because of an event we were hosting that night. Mark asked to go on a walk. I was a little annoyed, but I had a bit of time, so I agreed. We got to our neighborhood park, and I was telling him how anxious I was about this event when he stopped me and said that he was anxious, too. He got down on one knee and pulled out the ring. Now, for the rest of our lives, we can go back to that spot whenever we want!”

Ashton and Aaron–Mill Mountain Park, June 2019
“We moved to Roanoke just shy of two years ago. The Mill Mountain Star was one of the first places we went to visit to truly see the city. It has some of the most scenic views, and my fiancé wanted to pick some place that was not only beautiful but had meaning for us. It is also one of the first places we take family when they come and visit.”
