It’s a busy weekend for our department, and we’d love for you to join the fun!
Saturday: Give back to the trails
On Saturday, we’re celebrating National Public Lands Day – our largest annual trail work day. This year we’re going to work on extending the Rock N’ Roll trail at Carvins Cove.Your lunch, trail tools, and instruction will be provided, just bring sturdy shoes, comfortable clothes, and water. If you’d like to volunteer, please sign up online or email our Trails and Greenways supervisor, Renee Powers.
Sunday: Race at the Cove
Grab your mountain bike and head to Carvins Cove for our second annual XC/XXC Creature from Carvins Cove race. Sanctioned by the Virginia Endurance Series, the XXC course winds up and down 42 miles of singletrack and fire road trails. XXC riders will gain more than 6,000 ft of elevation and encounter some challenging trail features. Beginner and intermediate riders are encouraged to compete in the XC 15-mile course. Register online or on-site on Sunday morning!
Sunday: Try glow in the dark beer yoga
Swing by Soaring Ridge Craft Brewery on Sunday evening for a yoga class that you won’t forget. We’ll turn the lights down, turn the music up, and each participant will receive black light body paint, glow sticks, and a beverage. The class is $15 if you register in advance or $18 at the door while space is available. (Ages 21+)

Catch a free Marcus King Band concert at GO Fest
This year’s concert lineup for Roanoke’s annual Anthem GO Outside Festival (GO Fest) is impressive! The three-day festival in River’s Edge Sports Complex – North kicks off with live performances by Blue Mule and MC Broom and the Jam on Friday evening. On Saturday night, our headliner, The Marcus King Band, will hit the main stage at 9:15 p.m. The best part? All of the entertainment at GO Fest is FREE!
Experience tales of Roanoke hauntings at “Dead of Night”
Step back in time while touring a “haunted” historic mansion to uncover the stories of ghosts and hauntings. Choose where to go and what to watch during this immersive theatrical performance presented by Mill Mountain Theatre Conservatory actors. Enjoy complimentary hors d’ouevres and a cash bar at The Green Goat restaurant before taking a shuttle to the Fishburn Mansion.
There will be six showings: 6:00 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 29; and 6:00 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30. Tickets are selling out quickly, so please reserve your spot soon!
SeptemberCross races draw record attendance
The three-week cyclocross race series at Fallon Park wrapped up last Wednesday and 168 cyclists competed overall. Here’s a little recap blog and a photo gallery:

Free firewood at Fallon Park!
Our Urban Forestry Office is hosting two self-service giveaways of firewood quality wood from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14 and Saturday, Oct. 28.
Upcoming Winter Athletics Leagues
- Youth Basketball: While games don’t start until January, Roanoke’s youth basketball league usually starts practicing in November. Contact your region’s recreation league rep to register! Learn More
- Adult Indoor Soccer: Roanoke’s co-ed adult indoor soccer league season runs from December through January. Stay tuned, because registration will open later this fall. Learn More
- Youth Indoor Soccer: Mark the calendars! Although registration is currently closed, this indoor league for ages 6-18 runs from January through March.
