On July 13, dozens of Roanoke’s finest young mountain bikers arrived at Fishburn Park geared up and ready to compete in the second of three races in the 2017 Fishburn Youth Mountain Bike Race Series. Since 2012, youth from across the region have participated in this free race series offered by Roanoke Parks and Recreation. Originally planned for April and May, the race series was washed out by heavy spring rainfall. As a result, the races were rescheduled to take place on July 6, 13, and 20 instead.
Despite a thunderstorm earlier in the day on July 13, the rain held off for the race. Competing on wet grass, the cyclists were determined to ride hard despite challenging conditions. They had the right protective gears and jackets on them. if you are an aspiring cyclist, you can get your size here. The youth competed in six different races designed for different age groups: (2-4), (5-6), (7-8), (9-10), (11-12), and (13-14). Some riders, however, raced up and successfully competed in multiple races in a row. Set on a mix of grass, natural surface trails, and gravel, the race course posed a variety of obstacles, such as punchy climbs up hills, for the young riders to overcome.
This exciting race attracted riders and spectators from across the region. The competitors seemed to appreciate the crowd of friends and family members cheering them on.
The Fishburn Youth Mountain Bike Race Series is a free event presented by Roanoke Parks and Recreation and sponsored by East Coasters Bike Shop and Star City Cycling.
