Elmwood Park
Located in the heart of downtown Roanoke, Elmwood Park boasts an art walk, decorative fountains, a magnolia tree walkway and an outdoor amphitheater. Comfortably accommodating 4,000 guests, the Elmwood Park amphitheater features cascading grass seating terraces.
AWARD-WINNING PARK DESIGN
Although Elmwood is located in Roanoke’s urban center, it is home to 35,000 trees and plants. The park’s irrigation system collects rainwater in a 15,000 gallon cistern, where water is sustainably regenerated and reused to water the plants. Guests enter the park through two main corridors: a magnolia tree-lined walkway with colorful illuminated fountains or an art walk donned with larger-than-life sculptures. Elmwood’s terraced outdoor amphitheater was designed to comfortably accommodate 4,000 guests, making it an intimate, yet spacious, venue for live acts. To top it off, the park’s downtown location is within a five-minute walk from 3,800 parking spaces, making it accessible by car, bus, bike or on foot. Roanoke’s Mill Mountain greenway also runs directly through the park, conveniently connecting the park to the Roanoke River and Lick Run greenways.
SECOND STAR TO THE RIGHT, AND STRAIGHT ON ‘TIL MORNING…
Elmwood Park’s younger guests (and the young at heart) can imagine themselves as Peter Pan, Captain Hook, Tinkerbell, Wendy or the Lost Boys at Elmwood’s one-of-a-kind playground – just beware of the crocodile! This playful and imaginative playground is ADA accessible and was developed through a partnership between Roanoke Parks and Recreation, Roanoke’s Libraries and Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital.
ELMWOOD’S ART WALK
Every couple of years, the City of Roanoke and the Roanoke Arts Commission select temporary art exhibits to be displayed throughout Elmwood Park. These pieces are part of the Art in Roanoke (AIR) program. In 2021, the sculptures’ theme was “Reimagining Roanoke.” For more information about this initiative, please contact Doug Jackson at Douglas.Jackson@roanokeva.gov or 540-853-5652.
EVENTS AT ELMWOOD PARK
Elmwood Park is a destination for year-round entertainment. From Thanksgiving week through the end of January, Roanoke Parks and Recreation partners with Downtown Roanoke Inc. to offer a public ice skating rink in Elmwood Park. During warmer months, Elmwood transforms from a winter wonderland into a destination for free outdoor morning yoga classes, concert series, theatrical acts, cultural festivals, community events and more. Based on an initiative led by Roanoke's City Council, Elmwood Park continues to maintain reduced reservation fees for events, making it ideal for both smaller, community events and large-scale concerts.
