Snacks, backpacks, early mornings… the back-to-school season is upon us. But wait! Before you resign yourselves to a routine, here’s how to make this school year epic. We’ve got ideas for the whole family to kick off the semester with a bang!
PLAY ROANOKE BACK TO SCHOOL PROGRAMS
P.L.A.Y. After School Program
The Positive Learning and Adventure for Youth (P.L.A.Y.) program is available at three community recreation centers in Roanoke. It aims to provide children with a supportive after-school environment where they can receive homework help and engage in enriching activities. The program includes sports, games, arts and crafts, special guest visits, and more, all geared towards youth development. Due to limited space, registration operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Online registration is not available, so contact the center directly to check availability and secure a spot. After school program starts August 20.
Environmental Education programs
PLAY Roanoke offers a diverse range of environmental education programs. From engaging Bug and Bat nights in local parks to in-depth exploration in the Nature Lab series, there’s something for everyone to discover and learn at the Discovery Center on Mill Mountain and throughout the city.
Piano Lessons
Storytellers is a fun and engaging piano program designed for young beginners aged 6 and 7. Children will learn to play the piano while following captivating storylines. Through creative and expressive approaches, they will develop essential piano skills and build a strong foundation in music using a pre-reader stave. Classes meet every Tuesday from 4:30 to 5:15 pm, September 3rd to November 12th.
Youth Athletics
As partners with the volunteer- operated Recreation Clubs, Roanoke Parks and Recreation is offering indoor basketball for City youth ages 5 adn up. Practice begins in November and games begin in January. Dates may vary according to each rec club.

Roanoke is fortunate to have a strong network of organizations dedicated to supporting youth. Financial institutions like Truist often offer financial literacy programs and educational grants. Total Action for Progress (TAP) provides a comprehensive range of services including housing assistance, and youth programs. Ensuring the overall well-being of young people, Carilion Clinic Community Health and Outreach provides essential healthcare services and community programs. The Kiwanis Club of Roanoke is a dedicated group committed to improving the lives of children through various community initiatives.
To address the safety and well-being of young people, the Roanoke Valley SPCA offers animal-related programs that can foster responsibility and empathy. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office Youth Services and the Youth Services Citizen Board (City of Roanoke) play crucial roles in promoting safety and providing support for young people within the community.
