In 2015, outdoor retailer REI started the #OptOutside movement. Instead of opening their stores on the busiest shopping day of the year, REI chose to give their staff the day off and the opportunity to spend it outside!
Since we love any reason to be outside in our parks, we encourage you to also Opt Outside on Friday, November 24. Here’s some simple ideas to inspire your #OptOutside adventure:
1. Move your Body
Work up a sweat by with a run on the greenway, practicing your skills on a mountain bike, visiting fitness stations, or hitting up the half pipe. However you choose to do it, moving your body is a great way to experience the outdoors!
2. Take a Walk in a Park
There are over 50 parks in the City of Roanoke, many of them with walking paths, trails, or greenway access. If you’re walking with kids, visit one of the Track Trails (located at Washington Park and Garden City Recreation Center) and enjoy an interactive activity!
3. Play a Friendly Game
Whether it’s a pickup game of 3 on 3, pickleball with a buddy, or a solo round of disc golf in the park, the fun of playing in the outdoors is for everyone!
4. Relax in the Outdoors
Not all outdoor experiences need to be fast paced or action packed. The simple act of being in nature has been proven to be good for your health and well being. Find a cozy bench, peaceful boulder, or sunny patch of grass to spend some time outdoors. Listen to the sounds of the wildlife around you and take time to reflect.
5. Discover something New
Is there a nearby park you’ve never been to? Make it happen today! Find out why everyone raves about the trails on Mill Mountain or the beautiful views at Carvins Cove. Visit the new playground at Eastgate Park or take a ride on the latest section of Roanoke River Greenway!
If you #OptOutside today, share your adventure with us on Facebook or Instagram by using the hashtag #PlayRoanoke!
