May is National Bike Month, which means it’s a great time to travel on two wheels! Whether you’re a fan of mountain biking, road riding, gravel bikes, or all of the above, PLAY Roanoke has ideas for ways to celebrate this month! Here are our top four Bike Month ideas:
1. Disco Mountain Bike Race Series
This is really three ways to celebrate in one! Our Wednesday Night Disco Mountain Bike Race Series is celebrating one “Last Boogie” this year, after a decade of groovy races. The first three weeks in May, we’ll be donning our finest disco gear and riding up Mill Mountain. We’ve got categories for all levels of riders and ages 10+ are invited to participate. We’re also looking for volunteers to join if you’d rather support the race than compete. We’ve also got a pretty funky raffle to celebrate the “Last Boogie,” and both riders and volunteers qualify to win prizes!
2. Give Back to the Trails
If it weren’t for our awesome network of volunteers, we wouldn’t have all the trails and greenways that make Bike Month so enjoyable! Join us for a volunteer trail work day at Carvins Cove and be a part of a group of trail enthusiasts who want to give back to their community. Our monthly work day will be held on May 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
3. Explore a New Path
Bike Month is a great time to find a new road, trail, or greenways to explore! With 100+ miles of Trails and Greenways managed by PLAY Roanoke, we’re bound to offer something you’ve never visited before. Might we recommend the new skills loop at Vic Thomas Park? Perfect for a beginner mountain biker to learn new skills, and fun for advanced riders to play on as well!
4. Bike to Work
May 19 is National Bike to Work Day! If you were looking for the motivation to practice your bike commute, this is a great opportunity. Organize a group ride in your neighborhood or gather a few coworkers to bike to work together.
