You may remember last year’s celebration of six playground replacements across the city, including Garden City Park, West End Park, Staunton Park, River’s Edge Park South, Washington Park North, and Raleigh Court Park. This year, Play Roanoke is very excited to bring four more updated playgrounds to the park system! Beginning spring 2023, the existing playgrounds at Fishburn Park and Strauss Park will be replaced with brand new equipment. Belmont Park and Eastgate Park playgrounds will also be replaced this year, with that schedule to be determined.
These updates are part of a long list of deferred maintenance needs identified in our parks, including projects such as repaving parking lots, updating signage, repairing guardrail, resurfacing courts, and more. In 2021, Roanoke Parks and Recreation received $2.3 million to address these needs, with an additional $2 million added the following year. This significant investment has already enabled our department to address repair needs and provide quality park facilities for city residents and visitors, with more projects on the way.
A comprehensive look at all completed and future deferred maintenance projects can be found on our Deferred Maintenance page and additional updates can be found on our Recent Park Improvements page. Stay tuned for more details as these projects progress by following our social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) and joining our monthly e-newsletter list.
