Parents of young children have a new space for feedings and diaper changes in Wasena Park. Thanks to community collaboration, a nursing pod has been constructed to offer a semi-private space for breastfeeding and a changing table, conveniently located just off the Roanoke River Greenway near the park playground.
The project came about when local organization Huddle Up Moms identified a need for nursing mothers to have a private nursing space along the greenway. A Girl Scout Troop chose to take on the job as their Silver Award project and quickly got to work! “As a mom, it can be difficult to find a comfortable space to breastfeed and change a baby along the greenway. We want families to know that Roanoke supports them and this project is just one way we can demonstrate that we are a family-focused and breastfeeding friendly city,” say Huddle Up Mom’s Executive Director Dr. Jaclyn Nunziato.
To make the vision a reality, the Cadettes from Troop #170 worked closely with Huddle Up Moms and Roanoke Parks and Recreation throughout the project, earning one of the highest awards in Girl Scouting. Silver Awards are for middle school level scouts who work to address an issue their community is facing. The troop was hands-on designing the structure, raising funds, constructing the pod, and painting a welcoming mural on the outside. Both donations and the troops Girl Scout cookie sales funded the project.
The official ribbon cutting was held Saturday, November 10. Community members and families came together to recognize the achievement of Girl Scout Troop #170 and celebrate this new park amenity.
